Two Player Upside Down Stool Pacman

The boys at Fessenden added a new twist to a classic game. Using a Scratch created Pacman game and turning over the stools in the science lab, they made a collaborative version of Pacman thanks to MaKey MaKey.

Hour of Code

This week celebrates coding in education. The boys at Fessenden have started to code with Khan Academy. This is a fantastic way to integrate programming and coding into any class. It should take roughly an hour and the step by step instructions are really fantastic. Any teacher can get their students started, no programming background needed, even Chris Bosh agrees:

The Space Between: What to do between Thanksgiving and Winter Break

Many teachers struggle with the few weeks between Thanksgiving and Winter break. The challenge and the question persists, What can I get done in a short period of time that students won’t forget when they come back from an extended vacation? The answer is pretty simple, something absolutely different and fun.

The Fessy boys come with a ton of energy to each class, but it’s even crazier when the classes are sandwiched between two major vacations. Mr. Sanborn and Ms. Smith were willing to take a chance on a new project in their classes. With the help of ATAs, they put together a robotics unit that the boys love and find really challenging.

Here are some of the resources and expectations behind the unit:

Project Guidelines

Programming Checklist

Parking Space Challenge

EV3 Tutorials

The science classes have been flipped with videos pertaining to programming and robotics for homework, and work on their own robots during the class period. At the end of the unit the boys will compete in a grade wide challenge in front of the whole Middle School.

Fessenden Faculty Back from Thanksgiving Break

The Fessenden faculty was greeted with an Unconference when they came back to campus after a well needed Thanksgiving break. The Unconference covered a wide range of topics including:

  • Flipping the Classroom
  • Exploring Khan Academy
  • What Can AAA Do for You?: Arts Integration
  • Sharing your successes with new educational technologies or How I engaged the help of the ATAs
  • Find out about Empower
  • Differentiation and the Flipped Classroom: Managing Anxiety and Engagement
  • A Thematic Approach to Teaching History

“Flipping the Classroom” turned out to be one of the most well attended sessions during the day. Dave Bainster showed how he flipped his classroom with our CMS and allowed for more time during the class for project based learning.
